Emma George - JW Brands Ambassador

Emma George is a mother, a world champion athlete, an accomplished journalist and an extremely experienced angler. For more than 20 years she has been writing about her fishing expeditions and outdoor adventures and her articles and images have graced the pages of many national magazines and online publications.

Emma’s passion for fishing was forged on the banks of the Murray River in country Victoria during childhood. She progressed to lure and fly fishing in her teen years, targeting trout in the Victorian High Country and Australian salmon along the beaches.

Emma’s pole-vaulting career set sail during her university years in Melbourne. This path would eventually lead her to the Olympics, a Commonwealth Games Gold Medal and multiple World Records. Throughout her illustrious athletics career, fishing was always important to Emma. When she won her first substantial prize money from pole vaulting at 20 years of age, her winner’s cheque went straight towards her first boat – a four-metre tinny! Although Emma’s girlfriends didn’t quite understand her passion for fishing, her angling activities escalated throughout this period. Emma spent any spare time she could find boating and chasing snapper in Port Phillip Bay.

Emma moved to Western Australia in 1998 to prepare for the Sydney Olympics. Realising that her tinny was not big enough for fishing the Indian Ocean she reluctantly sold it and upgraded to a Haines Signature 702C. The bigger boat gave Emma freedom to chase dolphinfish, WA dhufish, big snapper, Sampson fish and a variety of offshore species. Exploring the West Australian coast also revealed some incredible sports fishing and Emma developed an addiction to casting lures for species such as trevally and queenfish. She also began trolling for marlin, mackerel and wahoo. Following retirement from pole vaulting, Emma also spent time in Karratha with her young family and indulged in the superb fishing on offer in the Pilbara.

Emma now resides in Perth with her husband and their three boys. Fishing, snorkelling, scuba diving and exploring are a large part of their family life and they embark on regular trips to Exmouth and beyond. Trevally, mackerel, dolphinfish, snapper WA dhufish and marlin are primary targets and their young boys can boast about catching fish others could only dream about. Although Emma admits that her children are spoilt in the fishing stakes, she relishes being able to share the love of the outdoors with them.

A valuable member of the Jarvis Walker family for over fifteen years, Emma actively fishes with our products, tests equipment, writes stories and shares her insights as an avid female fisho and mother. Through her articles, website and media activities, Emma hopes to encourage children away from screens and promote quality family time outdoors.
